The 12-month transition period for adjusting to the NDIS support lists will officially end on 2 October 2025.

Since October 2024, the NDIA has been helping participants, families, and nominees understand what they can and can’t purchase with NDIS funding. To make things clearer, the updated definition of NDIS supports separates purchases into two lists:

Supports that are NDIS supports – these can be purchased with your funding

Supports that are not NDIS supports – these cannot be purchased with your funding

What does this mean for you?

During the transition period, the NDIA gave everyone time to adjust to the new rules. If you bought something that wasn’t considered an NDIS support (under $1,500), no debt was raised the first or second time.

But from 3 October 2025, this will change.

👉 If you use your NDIS funding for something that isn’t an approved NDIS support, you may need to pay that money back – even if it costs less than $1,500.

How the NDIA will support you

The good news is the NDIA is putting more resources into helping people get it right before payments are made. If something doesn’t look quite right, they’ll check it manually and talk to you first.

If a debt is raised, the NDIA follows a fair process:

  • Your situation and personal circumstances are considered

  • You can ask for a review, waiver, or write-off

  • Payment plan options are available so you can repay in a way that suits your needs

  • Support is provided to help you understand your options

To make the most of your plan and avoid debt, spend only on items and services that are listed as NDIS supports. If you are unsure please ask your support coordinator.
